The Furniture Makers Company

The Furniture Makers’ Company is the 83rd Livery Company of the City of London (there are currently 103 in all) and only the sixth formed since the reign of Queen Anne.

Livery companies probably had their origins in the United Kingdom before 1066 and are similar to the fraternities and guilds (or mysteries) that flourished throughout Europe for many centuries.

The Furniture Makers’ Guild was formed in 1951. The reason for there being no Furniture Makers’ Guild or Company until the 20th Century is that other Livery Companies, such as the Carpenters, the Turners and the Upholders, controlled the various aspects of furniture making.

In 1963 the then Lord Mayor, Sir Ralph Perring, Bt, a Founder Member of the Guild, was able to present the then Master with the Grant of livery. Thus the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers was born.

Membership of the company is drawn from designers, manufacturers, retailers and educationalists. Indeed it is a prerequisite of the Livery that applicants work in or with the Furniture Industry in the United Kingdom.
